Dcn. Gary was born in Algoma, WI in 1954. He is the son of the late Earl and Grace Vanness, and the fourth of nine children. He attended Sacred Heart Seminary for high school, and then Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, majoring in Wood Techniques. In 1977 Gary married Shelly, who was attending UW-Milwaukee and graduated with a degree in Occupational Therapy. They have two children, a son and daughter, who were born in 1981 and 1983, respectively. In 1990, Gary returned to college to receive a teaching degree in Technology Education from the UW-Stout. He worked for the Appleton Area School District, first as a middle school Tech Ed teacher, and then as the House Construction teacher. Gary was ordained a deacon in 2013. His responsibilities at St. Nicholas Parish include visiting the sick and homebound, assisting at Mass, conducting marriage prep classes, assisting with baptisms, weddings, and funerals, coordinating the Right of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program, and developing a marriage enrichment program.
